ASIC required that all staff handling personal information were brought up-to-speed with the Australian Privacy Principles. The module needed to be relevant, accessible and engaging, especially since this was to be compulsory training. The module presents the core APPs through realistic scenarios, requiring the learner to make decisions along the way to achieve a positive outcome. Each decision results in a different ending to the scenario, and they can explore the consequences of the various actions they could take. The module also includes interviews with key members of the legal team, who reinforce the importance of each Australian Privacy Principle.
We recognise that a combination of great ‘storytelling’ and the views of interesting and diverse people, represent a form of learning delivery congruent with people’s daily media, such as that found on current affairs programs, news and documentaries, for example. As such, a combination approach of both passive (video) and interactive delivery was important, and the engaging graphic novel approach provided visual style and interest to bring the content to life.
